[Check availability](/cabins)[See the cabins](/cabins) First things first ## First things first Amador County grows some of the oldest zinfandel vines in the world — a few blocks planted in the 1860s are still producing. The wine is what the region is: warm days, decomposed granite soil, and reds that are generous rather than restrained. It is about an hour from Chalet Bruin and Koda Loft, in the rolling country east of Plymouth. Around forty wineries sit within a few miles of each other, most of them family-run, most with someone from the family behind the bar. Start around eleven, put lunch in the middle — there are a couple of proper restaurants in Plymouth and several wineries with kitchens or picnic lawns — and finish by four so the drive home is in daylight. Bring water and a hat: the valley is hot from June to September and the tasting is mostly outdoors these days. And nominate a driver before you leave the cabin, not on the third stop. Beyond it, the valley does well with Rhône varieties — syrah, grenache, mourvèdre — plus barbera and sangiovese, which suit the climate better than anything Bordeaux-shaped. Do not expect polished visitor centres. Expect a barn, a dog, a tasting sheet and a conversation. If you want the manicured version of a wine day, Murphys twenty minutes from the cabins does it better; if you want to talk to the person who made the wine, come here. 04 ## Where to stay for a wine day Both cabins are about an hour away in Arnold, which is the right distance for a designated driver and a slow afternoon: home to a hot tub, a kitchen and cool air at 4,000 feet.
