It is also a little over two hours from the cabins, and worth saying so. [Check availability](/cabins)[See the cabins](/cabins) First things first ## First things first If you want a guided whitewater day that a nervous first-timer will love and a teenager will talk about for a year, the South Fork of the American River near Coloma is the one. It has a long, dependable summer season, dozens of licensed outfitters, warm water by Sierra standards, and rapids that are exciting without being frightening. The catch is distance. From Arnold it is roughly two and a quarter hours each way — Highway 4 down, then north through the Gold Country. The Chili Bar run and the Gorge together make California's most popular guided whitewater day, commonly rated Class III. Scheduled upstream releases keep it running reliably from spring into September, long after natural rivers have dropped. The lower section, the Gorge, saves its biggest water for the end and runs through a deeper, quieter canyon. A full-day trip strings both together with lunch on a beach in between. Rapids here are commonly rated Class III, which in plain terms means real waves, real splashing and a real chance of getting bounced around — but with guides who run it every day and a river that is forgiving compared with what is upstream near Arnold. Spring brings the highest, coldest, pushiest water; midsummer is warm and family-friendly; September is mellow and quiet. Wetsuits are normal in spring and often provided. A rafting morning plus an afternoon walking the reconstructed town and the river bank makes the drive make sense.
