fair takes over every May. [Check availability](/cabins)[See the cabins](/cabins) First things first ## First things first Angels Camp sits at about 1,400 feet where Highway 4 drops out of the pines and meets Highway 49, the Gold Country's spine. It is the town you pass through on the way to and from the cabins, and the one where you will find the supermarket, the hardware store, the petrol and most of the restaurants that stay open on a Tuesday in February. It is also a genuine Gold Rush town rather than a reproduction of one. Angels Camp is the junction town of the southern Gold Country and the nearest full-service town below Arnold. It holds the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee each May at the fairgrounds south of the main street. About 20 miles and twenty to twenty-five minutes from Chalet Bruin and Koda Loft, straight down Highway 4. It takes half an hour to walk and an afternoon to do properly if you like poking through shops. The Angels Camp Museum, at the north end of town, is better than its modest frontage suggests — a yard full of wagons, stamp-mill machinery and mining hardware, with a carriage house that surprises people. It is the biggest weekend of the year in this county. It also fills every bed for thirty miles. If you want to be here for it, book early and expect traffic on Highway 49 and Highway 4. There is a large grocery store, a pharmacy, a couple of good coffee stops, hardware for the forgotten thing, and petrol that is cheaper than anything higher up the hill. Twenty minutes down, twenty minutes back. It is also the junction. Murphys is ten minutes east, Columbia and Sonora forty minutes south, San Andreas fifteen minutes north, and the caverns are all within twenty. If a day is going to involve Highway 49, it starts here. 05 ## Where to stay near Angels Camp Angels Camp has motels; Arnold has the pines.
