[Check availability](/cabins)[See the cabins](/cabins) First things first ## First things first Jamestown is small, and it is worth the drive for one big reason: Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, the only operating roundhouse and shop complex of its kind left in the West. The locomotives here are not static exhibits — they run, and they have starred in everything from Westerns to blockbuster television for a century. From the cabins it is about forty miles: Highway 4 to Angels Camp, then Highway 49 south past Sonora. Jamestown lies at the lower end of the Mother Lode belt, where Woods Creek cuts through the oak foothills — placer gold country, and the terminus of the Sierra Railway built in 1897. It is the hottest and lowest of the day-trip towns from the cabins, which makes autumn through spring the comfortable season for a visit. It is about 40 miles from Chalet Bruin and Koda Loft via Highway 4 and Highway 49 — roughly fifty-five minutes. A self-guided or docent-led walk through the shops is genuinely interesting even if trains are not your thing — it is a Victorian factory that never stopped. Steam excursion trains run on a seasonal schedule, usually spring through autumn, with special events at Halloween and Christmas. It is a half hour rather than an afternoon, and a good pairing with a morning at Railtown.
