# Mokelumne Hill

A Gold Rush town that simply stopped — stone buildings with iron shutters, one hotel, almost no traffic, and a hillside above the Mokelumne River canyon. Forty-five minutes from the cabins.

First things first

## First things first

Mokelumne Hill — Mok Hill to everyone local — was one of the richest and roughest camps of the Gold Rush, briefly the county seat, and by most accounts a place where a man was killed every weekend for seventeen weeks. Today about 700 people live there and nothing much happens, which is exactly why it is worth the drive.

It is 45 minutes from Chalet Bruin and Koda Loft, twenty minutes north of Angels Camp on Highway 49. The highway now bypasses the old town, so the historic streets carry almost no traffic at all.

One of the richest and roughest camps of the Gold Rush, and briefly the county seat, Mokelumne Hill is now a village of about 700 people.

The 1850s stone buildings with their original iron shutters survive largely intact, along with the Hotel Léger.

About 45 minutes from Chalet Bruin and Koda Loft.

## What is actually there

A compact grid of 1850s stone and brick buildings, several with the original iron doors and shutters that were the era's answer to fire. The Hotel Léger, built in stages from 1851, still operates as a hotel and bar and is the social centre of the village; the old Congregational church and the IOOF hall anchor the other corners.

There are no attractions in the ticketed sense. You park, you walk for half an hour, you read the plaques, you look over the edge towards the Mokelumne canyon, and you have a drink at the hotel. On a weekday you may have the whole place to yourself.

## Eating, drinking and what is open

The hotel's restaurant and bar are the main option and they keep small-town hours — evenings and weekends, with days off midweek. There is not a supermarket or a petrol station in the old town worth relying on.

Treat it as a stop rather than a self-contained day: lunch in Jackson or Angels Camp, an hour here, and something else either side. Check the hotel's current days and hours if you are counting on a meal.

## Where to stay near Mokelumne Hill

The Hotel Léger has rooms if you want to sleep inside the history. If you would rather have a kitchen, a hot tub and pines, both cabins are 45 minutes away in Arnold, and Mok Hill fits neatly into a Highway 49 day with Jackson, Sutter Creek and the wine country.

Half an hour to walk the old town, an hour or two if you stop for a meal or a drink at the Hotel Léger.
