[Check availability](/cabins)[See the cabins](/cabins) First things first ## First things first Sonora Pass is where Highway 108 climbs out of the forest, runs out of trees, and crosses the Sierra crest at 9,624 feet before dropping to Highway 395 on the eastern side. Only Tioga Pass in Yosemite is higher. The last miles on either side include sustained twenty-six percent grades, hairpins with no shoulder, and views that make passengers go quiet. From Arnold it is a long day: roughly two and a half hours to the summit by way of Sonora and the full length of Highway 108, and the same back unless you make a loop of it. Sonora Pass is the second-highest highway crossing of the Sierra Nevada, linking the Stanislaus forest with Highway 395 on the eastern side. The last miles on both sides climb above treeline on sustained grades, which is why the road closes with the first serious storms each autumn. The summit is about 100 miles from Chalet Bruin and Koda Loft via Sonora — roughly two and a half hours each way. Motorhomes and anything towing a trailer should not attempt it — Caltrans advises against vehicles over a certain length, and the switchbacks near the summit are tight enough that oncoming traffic requires care from an ordinary car. Use low gear on the descent rather than riding the brakes. At the top there is a small pullout, a trail crossing and an enormous amount of sky. The Pacific Crest Trail crosses here, so in July and August you will see through-hikers resupplying. Those are patterns, not promises: the only reliable answer for a given day is the current Caltrans road status for Highway 108. Even in the open season, early-summer mornings at the summit can sit below freezing, and thunderstorms build fast on August afternoons. Snow in June is normal. Take a warm layer regardless of what the thermometer in Arnold said when you left. 04 ## Walks and stops along the way The corridor below the summit is the point as much as the top: Kennedy Meadows, the Columns of the Giants, Donnells Vista and the Trail of the Gargoyles are all on the way up, and each is a fifteen-minute stop rather than an expedition. Above treeline, short walks from the pullouts get you into granite and whitebark pine in minutes. If you carry on east, the drop to Highway 395 through the Walker River canyon is spectacular in its own right, and Bridgeport is about an hour beyond the summit.
