# Yosemite: where to stay

An honest comparison of the bases people use for Yosemite — in the park, the gateway towns, and Arnold — including the trips where Arnold is the wrong answer.

[Check availability](/cabins)[See the cabins](/cabins)

First things first

## First things first

There is no single best place to stay for Yosemite, only a best place for the trip you are actually taking. The park is enormous, its gates are hours apart, and a base that is perfect for Tuolumne Meadows is a poor choice for Yosemite Valley in April.

We rent two cabins in Arnold, which is a Highway 4 town on the Calaveras side of the Sierra. That makes us a good base for some Yosemite trips and a bad one for others, and this page says which is which.

Geography

## Where Yosemite: where to stay sits

![Illustrated antique-style map of California inside the United States with a gold marker on Yosemite National Park and its gateway towns](/assets/yosemite-where-to-stay-DAmvOmkN.jpg)

Illustrated locator map — for orientation, not navigation.

Each gate serves a different part of the park, and the gates are hours apart, so the right base depends entirely on the itinerary.

Arnold suits a wider Sierra week with one or two Yosemite days; a gateway town suits several days in the valley.

Big Oak Flat is about two and a half hours from both cabins, and Yosemite Valley closer to three.

## Inside the park

Staying in the park means waking up inside the scenery and skipping the morning queue. It also means booking absurdly far ahead, paying resort-level prices for modest rooms, eating what the park serves, and giving up the option of a real kitchen or a quiet evening away from the crowds.

If your trip is entirely about Yosemite Valley for three or more days, and you can book a year out, in-park lodging is genuinely the right answer. Reservation windows and requirements change every year, so check the National Park Service Yosemite site rather than any third-party summary.

03

## The gateway towns

Groveland sits on Highway 120 west of the Big Oak Flat gate; Oakhurst and Fish Camp serve the southern gate near Wawona and the giant sequoias; El Portal and Mariposa cover the Highway 140 approach along the Merced, which stays lowest and is usually the last to close in winter. Each puts you within about an hour of a specific gate — and further from the others.

The trade-off is that gateway lodging is priced for its proximity and books out in summer, and the towns themselves are small. You are buying drive time, not an evening out.

04

## Arnold, honestly

From Arnold, the Highway 120 gate at Big Oak Flat is roughly two and a half hours away. Yosemite Valley is closer to three. That is a real drive, twice, in a day. What you get in exchange is a 4,000-foot pine-forest town with a hot tub, a full kitchen, laundry, an actual grocery store, and prices that are not set by a national park.

Arnold makes sense when Yosemite is one day of a wider Sierra week — Calaveras Big Trees for sequoias without a park queue, Highway 4 for high-country lakes, caverns, Murphys for wine, rafting on the Stanislaus, skiing at Bear Valley in winter. It does not make sense if you want to be in Yosemite Valley at sunrise three days running. In that case, book a gateway town and we will happily still be here next trip.

05

## Which gate, and when

Highway 120 from the west is the natural gate from Arnold and stays open year-round to the valley, though the Tioga Road section over the crest closes with the first serious snow and reopens in late spring or summer. Highway 140 through Mariposa and El Portal is the lowest, gentlest winter approach. Highway 41 from the south serves Wawona and the Mariposa Grove.

Entry requirements have changed repeatedly in recent years, including timed-entry reservations in peak periods. Whatever base you choose, check the National Park Service Yosemite site for the current rules and for road status before you drive.

## Frequently asked questions

Can you visit Yosemite as a day trip from Arnold? +

Yes, and plenty of our guests do — the Highway 120 gate is around two and a half hours away and Yosemite Valley closer to three. It makes for a long day with an early start.

Is Arnold a good base for Yosemite? +

It is a good base for a Sierra week that includes one or two Yosemite days, with sequoias, lakes, caverns and rafting much closer to hand. It is not the right base if you want to be in the valley at dawn several days in a row.

Which Yosemite entrance is best in winter? +

Highway 140 through Mariposa and El Portal is the lowest and generally the most reliable in winter. Tioga Road over the crest is closed all winter.

Do you need a reservation to enter Yosemite? +

It depends on the year and the season — timed-entry requirements have come and gone. Always check the National Park Service Yosemite site close to your travel dates.
