## The Best Fishing Spots Near Arnold, CA

October 14, 2023

Arnold sits in the middle of some genuinely good water. Highway 4 climbs from oak foothills to 8,000 feet in under an hour, which means you can fish a warm lowland lake in the morning and a granite-rimmed reservoir the same afternoon. Everything below is within an easy drive of the cabins, and a California freshwater license is all you need to start.

## White Pines Lake

The closest option and the friendliest one. White Pines is stocked with rainbow trout through spring and early summer, and the shoreline path means you can fish it without a boat. Bass and bluegill hold along the shaded edges once the water warms.

It is the right call with kids — there is a beach, a picnic area and bathrooms, so nobody is stuck waiting in the car. Mornings before the swimmers arrive are the productive window.

## Stanislaus River

The North Fork above Arnold is classic pocket water: fast riffles, deep granite pools and wild rainbows that respond to a well-drifted dry fly. Sourgrass and the stretches around Big Trees State Park give the easiest access.

Flows drop and clear through summer, which makes for excellent sight fishing but also means light tippet and careful wading. Spring runoff is worth waiting out.

## Lake Alpine

At 7,300 feet, Lake Alpine holds rainbow and brown trout and is stocked once the highway clears — usually late May. Trolling from a kayak or small boat works well, and the granite shoreline offers plenty of spots for anyone fishing from land.

The season here is short. Highway 4 closes above the lake in winter, so plan on June through October.

## Spicer Meadow Reservoir

Spicer is the quiet one. A paved spur off Highway 4 leads to a boat ramp and campground, and the reservoir produces rainbow and brown trout for anglers willing to work the deeper water along the dam and the inlet arms.

Wind picks up most afternoons across the open surface, so early starts pay off here more than anywhere else on this list.

## Utica Reservoir

Utica is shallow, granite-studded and full of small islands, which makes it a favourite for float tubes and paddle craft. Brook and rainbow trout hold in the channels between rock outcrops, and the dispersed camping along the shore lets you fish dawn and dusk without driving.

The access road is rough dirt and the lake sits above 6,800 feet, so it opens late and the surface can drop fast in autumn.

## Before you go

Anyone sixteen or older needs a California freshwater fishing license, available online from the Department of Fish and Wildlife or over the counter in Arnold and Murphys. Check current stocking reports and any seasonal restrictions before heading up — high-country waters change quickly with snowpack.

Pack layers whatever the forecast says. It can be eighty degrees in town and forty at Utica at sunrise, and afternoon thunderstorms build fast over the crest in summer.
