# The Top Mountain Bike Trails Near Arnold, CA

Twenty-three rideable trails within two hours of the cabins — the whole Arnold Rim Trail network out the front door, the Bear Valley lift, and the lakeside singletrack at New Melones.

## First things first

Arnold is a genuinely good place to keep a bike. The Arnold Rim Trail was built as a multi-use system rather than a hiking path with bikes tolerated on it, which means seventeen and a half miles of purpose-built singletrack start within ten minutes of both cabins — and you can pick a two-mile family loop or a technical descent off the same trailhead. 

Drive a little and the range widens: fire roads through the sequoias, river singletrack at Sourgrass, hot lakeside loops at New Melones for the shoulder seasons, and a chairlift with bike carriers at Bear Valley when you would rather not earn the descent. Everything below is grouped by how far you actually have to drive, and difficulty is stated the way locals ride it, not the way a trail app grades it.

## Right out the door: the Arnold Rim Trail

Five to ten minutes from the cabins, and the reason a lot of people bring bikes at all. The ART is a connected network, so most rides are a loop stitched together from named segments rather than an out-and-back. 

-   **Arnold Rim Trail, full system** — 17.5 miles, intermediate to advanced. Purpose-built multi-use singletrack. The Beast climb gains 500 feet in a quarter mile; most riders walk it and feel no shame. 
-   **Sunset Loop** — 4 miles, beginner. The easiest loop on the system and the right first ride with children. 
-   **Logging Museum Loop** — 2 miles, beginner. The shortest loop, from the Sierra Nevada Logging Museum trailhead. 
-   **Wilma's Wiggles** — 1.5 miles, intermediate. Twisty singletrack and the best introduction to how the network rides. 
-   **Yabba Dabba Doo / Bamm-Bamm** — 2 miles, intermediate. The flowier pair, usually ridden back to back. 
-   **Falls Away** — 1 mile, intermediate. Descent toward the San Antonio drainage. 
-   **ART: Top of the World (segments 13–14)** — 1 mile, intermediate. The viewpoint segment, normally ridden as part of a bigger loop. 
-   **San Domingo Loop** — 12 miles, intermediate. The long loop option when you have a whole morning. 
-   **ART: Meat Grinder (segments 14–17)** — 3 miles, advanced. The technical signature of the system. 
-   **Wall Street** — 1 mile, advanced. Steep, technical, and short enough to session. 
-   **Arnold Gravel Ride** — 39 miles, advanced. A long fire-road day out of town on a gravel bike or a hardtail.

## Fifteen to thirty minutes: sequoias and the river

-   **Calaveras Big Trees fire roads** — about 20 miles of tarmac and fire road, beginner to intermediate, five to fifteen minutes away. Worth knowing before you load up: the park's singletrack is hiking-only, so bikes stay on the roads. It is still a lovely, shaded, low-stress ride among giant trees. 
-   **Sourgrass Recreation Area** — about 15 miles of fire road and shared-use trail along the North Fork Stanislaus, intermediate, twenty to thirty minutes up Highway 4. Cool in summer because the river is right there, and the best of it is early morning before the swimmers arrive.

## Thirty-five to forty-five minutes: Glory Hole at New Melones

Down Highway 49 at New Melones, the Glory Hole network is the answer to the months when the high country is either snowed in or too cold to enjoy. It is rolling lakeside singletrack, and it is hot and exposed — a spring and autumn ride, not a July one. Most people link two or three of these into one circuit. 

-   **Buck Brush Loop** — 4 miles, beginner to intermediate. 
-   **Carson Creek Loop** — 5 miles, intermediate. Part of the standard circuit. 
-   **Frontier** — 3 miles, intermediate. Connector between the loops. 
-   **Tower Climb** — 3 miles, intermediate. The climb that earns the view over the reservoir.

## Forty to fifty-five minutes: Bear Valley and Lake Alpine

The high-country season is short — roughly July into October, depending on the snow year — and it is the best riding in the county while it lasts. Bear Valley runs its chairlift with bike carriers in summer, so the downhill is available without the climb; a lift ticket is required, and hours vary week to week, so check before driving up. 

-   **Bear Valley lift-access downhill** — about 4 miles of runs, intermediate to advanced. Berms, tabletops and a skills park at the base. 
-   **Bear Valley to Lake Alpine Trail** — 6 miles, intermediate. The classic local out-and-back, village to lake. 
-   **Bee Gulch from Chickadee** — 4 miles, intermediate. Off the ski area road, and the ride locals name first. 
-   **Lake Alpine Loop, Three Creeks** — 5 miles, intermediate. Rock spines and gardens on the west end, flat along the shore. 
-   **Emigrant Trail** — 1.2 miles, advanced. A steep climb south of Osborn Ridge dropping to Slickrock Road; rideable both ways if you are strong.

## An hour and a half plus: Highway 108

-   **Pinecrest Lake Loop** — 4 miles, beginner, ninety-five minutes to just under two hours away. A flat lakeside loop that is lovely at seven in the morning and unpleasant at two in the afternoon, because in summer it carries heavy foot traffic. Ride it early or late, yield generously, and treat it as part of a Pinecrest day rather than the reason for one.

## Practical notes

Bring more water than you think, particularly at New Melones — there is no shade and no tap. The ART crosses forest roads in several places, so assume vehicles. Yield to hikers and horses on every multi-use trail; the ART's reputation with the people who maintain it is the reason bikes are welcome there. 

Bikes travel fine in either cabin's parking area, and there is room to hose a bike down and hang wet kit at the end of the day. Trail conditions after storms change fast in spring — a trail that was perfect in April can be a mud trench in May, and riding it wet is how singletrack gets ruined.

## Where to stay for a riding weekend

Both cabins are in Arnold, minutes from the Arnold Rim Trail trailheads, half an hour below Bear Valley and forty minutes above New Melones. Chalet Bruin suits a group riding together; Koda Loft suits a couple or a pair of riders. Hot tub afterwards, kitchen instead of a queue, and somewhere dry to leave the bikes overnight.

## Frequently asked questions

Can I ride from the cabin without driving? + 

Effectively yes — the Arnold Rim Trail trailheads are a few minutes away, and the Logging Museum and White Pines links can be reached on the road for a short spin.

When does the Bear Valley lift run for bikes? + 

Summer only, typically from around July once the snow clears until early autumn, and not every day of the week. Check the resort's current schedule before you drive up — a lift ticket is required.

Are bikes allowed on the Big Trees singletrack? + 

No. Calaveras Big Trees State Park keeps its singletrack for hikers; bikes are welcome on the paved roads and fire roads, which still add up to a good twenty miles.

What is the best month to ride here? + 

May, June, September and October in Arnold itself. July and August are better spent high — Bear Valley and Lake Alpine — and the New Melones loops are best from October through April.
