## First things first

September 2, 2026

Sonora is an hour down Highway 4 and across on Highway 49, and it is where guests go when they want a proper choice rather than the three or four rooms open on the hill. Almost everything worth eating is on or within a block of Washington Street, which means you can park once and walk, and the historic centre is pleasant enough to make an evening of it.

Every rating below comes from Google Places, retrieved September 2026, with the review count where the volume matters — a 4.8 across a thousand reviews is a much stronger signal than a 4.8 across thirty. Two local habits are worth knowing before you drive down: several of the best kitchens close at the start of the week, and almost nothing except the wing house and the casino is still serving after nine. Book a weekend table, and if you are heading down for breakfast, get there before nine.

## Mandy's Breakfast House

The strongest single signal in the whole county: 4.8 across more than a thousand reviews, open every day from seven until two. It is a straightforward American breakfast room — big plates, quick refills, no ceremony — and it is full of people who live in Sonora rather than people passing through, which is the reason to trust it. Lunch is served but the breakfast is why it is here.

> Arrive before nine at a weekend. The queue moves faster than it looks, but it exists.

**Where:** Sonora · **Drive:** 60 minutes from the cabins · **Rating:** 4.8 across 1,054 reviews · **Hours:** daily, seven to two

## Bigwood Brew Works

The best-rated brewery within two hours of Arnold at 4.8, making its own beer on site and cooking burgers to go with it — including a monthly specialty burger that regulars turn up for specifically. Smaller and more serious about the beer than the bigger rooms in town, and the right choice when the beer matters more than the length of the menu. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

> Ask what the month's burger is; it is almost always the best thing on the board.

**Where:** Sonora · **Drive:** 60 minutes · **Rating:** 4.8 · **Closed:** Tuesday and Wednesday

04

## Pinocchio's

Long-established Italian, since moved into a larger space, at 4.7 across more than 600 reviews. The cooking is the reason it has survived every restaurant cycle in Sonora; the acoustics are the reason to think about who you are bringing. It is loud when full — excellent for a table of eight, poor for an anniversary where you want to hear each other.

> Big group yes, quiet dinner no. Book either way at a weekend.

**Where:** Sonora · **Drive:** 60 minutes · **Rating:** 4.7 across 620 reviews

05

## Bourbon Barrel

A genuine cocktail bar that also feeds you properly: order at the bar, sit where there is room, and expect a room aimed at adults rather than families. There is a dog menu, which in a town where half the patios have a dog under the table is a sensible piece of business rather than a gimmick. The best drinks between Arnold and the valley floor.

> Come for the cocktails; treat the food as the excuse to stay for a second.

**Where:** Washington Street, Sonora · **Drive:** 60 minutes · **Rating:** 4.7

06

## Blaze Wings

Wings, local beer on tap and the latest kitchen in town on Friday and Saturday nights. At 4.6 it is consistent rather than ambitious, and its real value is timing: if you are driving back from the coast, off the river late or out of a show at ten, this is one of very few places still cooking.

> The late option. Almost everything else in Sonora stops serving at nine.

**Where:** Sonora · **Drive:** 60 minutes · **Rating:** 4.6 · **Hours:** late Friday and Saturday

## The Armory

American cooking in a big historic hall with live music and line dancing several nights a week, at 4.5, closed Monday. The important thing is that it is two different venues depending on the night: a relaxed, roomy dinner midweek, and a properly loud night out with a band at a weekend. Check what is on before you decide which one you are booking.

> Look up the music calendar first, then choose your evening.

**Where:** Sonora · **Drive:** 60 minutes · **Rating:** 4.5 · **Closed:** Monday

08

## Emberz Wood-Fired Foodz

Wood-fired pizza, open daily, 4.4 across nearly 1,300 reviews — a high-volume kitchen that has managed to stay consistent, which is harder than the rating makes it sound. It is not the best meal in Sonora and does not claim to be; it is the one that is open on a Monday, feeds a car full of hungry people quickly and never starts an argument.

> The dependable fallback when the better rooms are booked or closed.

**Where:** Sonora · **Drive:** 60 minutes · **Rating:** 4.4 across 1,280 reviews · **Hours:** daily

![Emberz Wood-Fired Foodz](/assets/dining-pizza-oven-wu8paA5M.jpg)

09

## Diamondback Grill

The most-reviewed restaurant in town — more than 1,300 reviews at 4.4 — doing burgers and a full bar in a historic Washington Street building, open every day. It has been Sonora's default lunch for years and the burger genuinely stands up against the newer places. Expect a wait at peak; the bar seats turn over faster than the tables.

> Order the burger, sit at the bar if the tables are backed up.

**Where:** Washington Street, Sonora · **Drive:** 60 minutes · **Rating:** 4.4 across 1,343 reviews · **Hours:** daily

## Worth the extra ten minutes: Columbia and Jamestown

Two things sit just outside Sonora that beat most of what is inside it. Columbia State Historic Park, ten minutes north, has the Bella Union at 4.7 for dinner in a Gold Rush building, the Jack Douglass Saloon at 4.5 for sarsaparilla at an 1800s bar — the best thing to do here with children — and the Columbia House for breakfast on the gas-lit street. The City Hotel and What Cheer Saloon changed hands in early 2026, so judge it on this year's reviews only.

Ten minutes the other way, Jamestown has Fasty's BBQ Joint at 4.7, Texas-style barbecue run out of the back of a gas station that sells out by early afternoon, and Perch Rooftop Dining at the casino, the most expensive meal in the region and the only proper rooftop terrace — book it for sunset or not at all.

> If you are down here for a whole day, eat breakfast in Sonora and dinner in Columbia.

**Where:** Columbia State Historic Park and Jamestown, both off Highway 49 · **Drive:** 65 to 70 minutes from the cabins

## Also interesting

On the way down the hill, the Pickled Porch Cafe in Angels Camp makes everything in house and closes at three, and Avellino in Angels Camp is the highest-rated room anywhere near here at 4.9 — an Italian market and wine bar, open Thursday to Sunday. Coming back up, the Sugar Shack in Twain Harte opens at six in the morning and sits directly on the Dodge Ridge run.
