[Check availability](/cabins)[See the cabins](/cabins) Road trips ## First things first January 14, 2024 Highway 49 runs the length of the Gold Country, stringing together the camps that boomed after 1848. From the cabins you join it at Angels Camp, twenty minutes down Highway 4, and you can drive as much or as little of it as you want. The mistake people make is trying to see all of it. Ten towns in a day means ten car parks and no lunch. Highway 49 links the camps that boomed after 1848, from Sonora and Columbia in the south to Jackson and Sutter Creek in the north. It is two lanes and winding, so plan on 35 to 40 miles an hour average once towns are counted. The corridor starts twenty minutes below both cabins at Angels Camp; either loop is about six hours door to door. Angels Camp for coffee, then north on 49: San Andreas for the courthouse museum, Mokelumne Hill for a half-hour walk through the quietest old town on the road, and into Jackson for the tailing wheels and lunch on Main Street. Afternoon: Sutter Creek for a walk and a tasting room, or turn east instead for Black Chasm Cavern, Indian Grinding Rock and Volcano. Home by six. Jamestown and Railtown 1897 add steam trains if you time the operating days right. That is a full day on its own — about six hours with stops, and more if you add Twain Harte. Petrol is easy in Angels Camp, Jackson and Sonora and awkward in between. Summer afternoons in the foothills run above 95 degrees; spring and autumn are the seasons for this drive. Almost everything on the corridor closes earlier than you expect, and museums often shut two or three days a week.
