Either way, a family that wants a sledding day does not need lift tickets or a resort — it needs a plowed place to park, a slope without trees at the bottom, and somewhere warm to go afterwards. They are free, unsupervised and completely dependent on the storm: some weeks they are perfect, other weeks they are bare ground. Park only in plowed pull-outs, never in a traffic lane or in front of a gate, and keep well clear of the snowplows. Calaveras Big Trees State Park, five minutes from the cabins, is the reliable snow-day walk rather than a sledding hill — the groves are magnificent under snow and the park stays open, with a day-use fee. Sledding there is limited and signed; treat it as a snowshoe and photograph day instead. Further up, around 6,000 feet near Cottage Springs and Big Meadow, the snow is deeper and lasts longer. This is Sno-Park country: California charges for the plowed lots, the permit is bought online or at local vendors, and the rangers do check. They groom lanes, provide the tubes, and run whatever the storm did or did not do overnight, which makes them the safe bet for a birthday or a group with small children. Both are reservation-first on weekends and holidays, and both sell out. It is about two hours from Arnold to Leland by way of Angels Camp and Sonora, so this is a full-day outing rather than a morning; leave early and treat lunch as part of the plan. Bring a rubbish bag for wet clothes and something hot in a flask; there are no cafés at a forest pull-out. The things that spoil a snow-play day are predictable: arriving at eleven to find the plowed lot full, no Sno-Park permit when one is needed, no chains when control goes up while you are sledding, and sledding into trees or towards the road. Pick a slope with a long flat run-out, keep the youngest well away from the fast lane, and go home before everyone is soaked and cold. Chalet Bruin sleeps a family group; Koda Loft suits a couple or a small family.
