It is a nine-hole course laid out through ponderosa pine and cedar at roughly 3,000 feet, with alternate tee boxes so a full round can be played as eighteen. There is a clubhouse with food and a bar, carts, and an indoor golf simulator.
One thing to know before you set off: public listings have shown the course as temporarily closed, and the property itself has been publicly advertised for sale. Status here has changed more than once in recent years. The course itself
It is a short, tight mountain nine rather than a resort layout — trees close on both sides of most fairways, elevation changes that add or take away a club, and greens small enough that missing them costs you. Locals play it in well under two hours on a cart, and it is forgiving enough for a mixed-ability group where not everyone plays regularly.
The setting is the real draw. You are inside the forest the whole way round, with the Sierra foothills dropping away to the west, and on an early summer morning you are more likely to see deer on a fairway than another group.
The clubhouse, the simulator and the fields
Beyond golf, the site has served as a small community hub: a restaurant and bar at the clubhouse, an indoor simulator that makes a wet February afternoon playable, and open fields that have hosted soccer and football games. Carts are available and the clubhouse has typically served food.
All of that depends on the course being open, which is exactly why the phone call comes first. If it is closed when you visit, the Forest Meadows roads and the surrounding pines still make a pleasant twenty-minute detour on the way to Murphys.
Forest Meadows or Sequoia Woods?
Sequoia Woods Country Club in Arnold is the other option, and it is a mile from both cabins rather than fifteen minutes down the hill. Sequoia Woods is the longer, more established club course; Forest Meadows is the quicker, more casual nine when you want to be back for lunch.
If you only have time for one round and you are staying with us, Sequoia Woods is the safer plan simply because it is closer and its operation is steadier. Forest Meadows is worth checking on as the bonus round — and it pairs neatly with a Murphys afternoon, since Main Street tasting rooms are another ten minutes down Highway 4.
