Murphys sits along Angels Creek in the oak-and-foothill-pine belt, low enough to grow wine grapes and warm enough to be a summer town while Arnold is still in snow country.
The limestone and marble under these hills is what created the local caverns, and the creek drainage feeds toward the Stanislaus River on its way to the Central Valley.
It is about 8 miles down Highway 4 from Chalet Bruin and Koda Loft — roughly 15 minutes.
Murphys, originally known as Murphy’s Diggings, owes its name and inception to a group of gold-seeking adventurers led by John and Daniel Murphy in 1848.
