Moaning Caverns

Whether you're intrigued by the eerie moaning sound, captivated by the subterranean landscapes, or seeking adventure through rappelling, the Moaning Caverns have something to offer every visitor.

An Underground World

The Moaning Caverns are part of a complex karst cave system, a term used to describe a landscape shaped by the dissolution of soluble rocks like limestone or marble. This process occurs over thousands of years as rainwater becomes slightly acidic by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, dissolving the rock as it percolates through the ground.

What to See at the Moaning Caverns

The Grand Chamber:

Upon entering the cave, visitors are greeted by the breathtaking Grand Chamber. This colossal space, large enough to accommodate the Statue of Liberty, leaves visitors in awe of nature’s artistic prowess. Stalactites hang from the ceiling while stalagmites rise from the floor, forming a surreal, otherworldly landscape.

The Bottomless Pit:

One of the most famous features of the Moaning Caverns is the Bottomless Pit. While it may not be truly bottomless, its depth of 165 feet (50 meters) creates an illusion of endlessness. Brave visitors can peer over the edge and experience the exhilarating feeling of staring into the abyss.

Crystal Palace:

Deeper into the cave lies the Crystal Palace, a hidden treasure of glittering calcite formations. This chamber showcases the delicate and intricate beauty of nature’s geological artwork.

The Moaning Sound:

As you explore the caverns, you’ll undoubtedly encounter the mysterious moaning sound. This auditory wonder is a testament to the cave’s unique acoustics, created by the vast chambers and passages.

The Origins of the Moaning Caverns

The history of the Moaning Caverns dates back millennia, with evidence suggesting that indigenous people used the cave for various purposes, including rituals and shelter. However, the first recorded exploration of the cave took place in 1851 when Captain Joseph Taylor and Walter J. W. Taylor ventured into its depths. It was during this exploration that the eerie moaning sound, for which the cave is named, was discovered. The moaning is caused by the wind entering and exiting the cave, creating a haunting symphony that echoes through its chambers.

Over the years, the cave has been the subject of scientific study, attracting geologists and spelunkers alike. In 1927, a group of explorers led by Jack Mitchell mapped out the cave’s intricate passages, revealing its true extent. The Moaning Caverns have since become a popular destination for tourists and adventure seekers.

32 FOOT ROCK CLIMBING TOWER

The Moaning Cavern Rock Climbing Tower has several rock climbing routes to choose from, and while the climbing options range from easy to hard, all are suitable for the whole family. All participants wear climbing harnesses and are clipped on to the route of their choice so you or your kids can just climb to the top and then make use of the built in belay system to jump away from the wall for a smooth, automatic descent back to the ground.
